Red Magic 9 Pro & Red Magic 9 Pro+ arrives officially
In December of the previous year, Nubia’s Red Magic unveiled the Red Magic 8 Pro series, featuring the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip and a distinctive boxy design. Following this, the Red Magic 8S Pro series was introduced later in the current year, showcasing an overclocked version of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. Today, the company has officially launched the Red Magic 9 Pro series in China, boasting the advanced Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset. While both phones share identical appearances, there are noteworthy distinctions between them, primarily revolving around charging speed, battery size, and RAM capacity.
A significant design upgrade in the Red Magic 9 Pro series is the absence of a camera bump on the back, resulting in a completely flat rear surface, mirroring the front and sides. Notably, the phones maintain the same svelte thickness as their predecessors, measuring at 8.9mm. Red Magic’s engineering prowess is evident not only in maintaining this slim profile but also in eliminating the camera bump.
The Red Magic 9 Pro further impresses with its substantial 6,500mAh battery, surpassing the Red Magic 8 Pro’s 6,000mAh cell. It’s essential to note that the Red Magic 9 Pro+ features a slightly smaller 5,500mAh battery, a compromise made for its enhanced charging speed. The Pro model supports 80W fast charging, while the Pro+ model boasts a remarkable 165W fast charging capability.
Enhancing the cooling capabilities, both models feature an ICE 13 cooling system with 10 layers and a sizable 10182mm² vapor chamber. Additionally, a cooling fan with a spin capability of up to 22,000 RPM and a 30% improvement in thermal conductivity is incorporated.
The display on both phones is a 6.8-inch BOE Q9+ 10-bit OLED with a refresh rate of up to 120Hz, a peak brightness of 1600 nits, and a resolution of 2480 x 1116 pixels. The panel boasts a 960Hz touch-sampling rate (2000Hz instantaneous touch-sampling rate). The selfie camera is discreetly placed under the display, a design approach consistently employed by Red Magic.
Under the hood, both phones are powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset. While the Red Magic 9 Pro offers up to 12GB LPDDR5X RAM, the 9 Pro+ model provides options for 16GB or 24GB LPDDR5X RAM. Storage capacities range from 256GB to 512GB for the Pro model and up to 1TB for the Pro+ model.
The camera setup, while not groundbreaking, holds up well on paper. The dual-camera configuration on the back features a primary 50MP Samsung GN5 sensor with OIS and a 50MP Samsung JN1 sensor for the ultrawide camera. The selfie camera boasts a 32MP sensor.
Additional features include stereo speakers, a 3.5mm headphone jack, triple microphones, and an under-display fingerprint sensor.
Both phones run on Red Magic OS 9.0, based on Android 14. The Red Magic 9 Pro is available in three color options, with two offering a transparent design on the back. Pricing for the Red Magic 9 Pro starts at ¥4399 (~$620) and goes up to ¥5399 (~$747) for the top-tier model. As for the Red Magic 9 Pro+, prices in China range from ¥5499 (~$775) to ¥6999 (~$986) for the highest configuration with a transparent design.
